Chibi Totoro

I am a huge fan of Studio Ghibli. I have wanted to make a cute Totoro ever since I saw this cute one on Ravelry, and have just figured out a very quick loom knitting version. I think there is room for some small adjustments, but I’m happy to post this for now, and as I try again I will update the pattern. This only took about 10 minutes to knit, and then another 10 figuring out how to embroider the eyes.

To make your own chibi Totoro, you will need some black and white yarn (I used worsted weight for the one pictured), a flower loom, some stuffing/fiberfill, and a yarn needle.

Begin with a drawstring cast on. If you’ve never tried that before I can recommend an excellent video tutorial.

Flat knit in rounds for about 2 inches. Pull your drawstring closed. Keep in mind that the knitting will be longer than it looks on the loom once you’re done. I flat knit about 2.5 inches for this one.

Bind off 6 pegs with a drawstring bind-off (just like making a hat). Now pull your working yarn over to the last peg tightly- this will half-way close your Totoro. Next make 3 peg i-cord using the last 3 pegs. 3 row with 3 pegs, then decrease one, 3 rows with 2 pegs, decrease 1, 3 times with 1 peg, cut your yarn and pull to make a little knot. Now make a mirror image i-cord on your other 3 pegs.

Your Totoro is no longer on the loom. Fill with some stuffing. Use a yarn tail by the base of the ears to cinch the head closed and tie, then tuck it inside the Totoro.

Weave in your yarn tails (I like to just tuck them into the stuffing where possible). Use some black yarn to embroider on the eyes. I had to separate into a thinner strand to do the outer part of the eyes.

Use some white yarn to sew on a little lump for a tail. That’s it!

If you love all things Miyazaki like myself, try out the Soot Sprite too!
